What You Need To Know About Healthy Locs...

Follow These 3 Simple Steps to Get The Healthy Locs You've Been Dreaming Of!

It has almost been 15 months since I started my loc journey, and I can’t believe how much my hair has grown. When I first started, I had about 70 locs, and now they are hanging and flowing everywhere. My locs have been getting me so many compliments that I can’t even keep up. People are always asking me about them and telling me how beautiful they are. I am so glad I decided to loc my hair. It has been a long process, but it has been totally worth it!

I try to wash my hair at least once a week, but if I'm extra busy or tired, I might take 2! When I'm done washing my locs, I always blow dry my hair because sitting under a hooded dryer can take hours and hours! I also blow-dry my hair because it stretches my locs. I'm all about the length, and if I have it, I want to flaunt it! Shrinkage is so real, and it has always been a problem! But, when I blow-dry my hair, I am given instant inches, which lasts about a week--or until the next wash, which is more than perfect!

Overall, my locs are growing beautifully! The only downside has been some thinning, especially around the nape of my neck, which I’ve been taking steps to address.

I recently had to interlock my locs in some of the thinner areas to keep them healthy. It was a necessary step to prevent any further breakage, but I did lose some length as a result. This step was necessary to maintain the health of my locs, which are growing more beautiful every day.

I feel blessed to be able to wear my natural hair in all its glory!

As a loose natural, the amount of time it took to do my hair used to stress me out. But now that I have locs, it’s easy peasy. With my naturally loose coils, I was limited in how I could style my hair and for how long. I had to dedicate time to retwisting my hair. Now, I can literally get up and go! A little grease here and a little mist there and I’m out the door. Locs have been a saving grace, and I’m so happy with them.

Want Healthy Locs? Here are 3 Takeaways!

Locs are a gorgeous and convenient way to wear your hair naturally. But they do come with some specific care instructions. At this point in my journey, here's what I've concluded:

  1. First of all, keep your hair moisturized. If you notice a change in your hair’s health, consult with a loctician. They’ll be able to help you keep your locs in great condition.

  2. You should also be careful about the products you put in your hair, especially if you want your locs to be long and healthy. Hair jewelry and dye may seem harmless, but they can cause breakage and damage that could end or restart your loc journey.

  3. Finally, avoid comparing your hair to other people’s. Everyone's hair is different, and locs grow at different speeds. If you constantly compare your hair to others, you’ll just make yourself miserable. Embrace your own hair journey, and love the locs you have!
